RANDOLPH OWEN
TEACHER - ALTERNATIVE
After graduating from Benson High School in 1980, Randy spent four years in the Marine Corps, where he was a combat engineer and a clerk typist. While a member of the Marines he was able to visit Japan, Korea and Norway. During college, he also spent seven years in the Arizona Army National Guard where he was a light equipment specialist. Throughout the summers Randy fought wildland fires for the Bureau of Land Management. After earning an AA and AAS in computer science from Eastern Arizona College, he attended Northern Arizona University where he received his BS in Elementary Education. After subbing a few years, he began teaching Adult Basic Education and GED studies at the Safford state prison, where he worked for 15 years. During those 15 years he was able to gain a master’s degree in Elementary Education and another in Educational Leadership while also becoming certified as an English teacher and a Principal. He then began working in San Carlos at Rice Elementary as a reading interventionist. After moving to the high school, he taught two years of English and was asked if he would like to move over to the Alternative school. Randy has found that he enjoys working with the students who need an extra boost. In his off time, Randy enjoys reading, cooking, and traveling. He lives with his nephew who he has raised, and a niece who moved in to avoid the rat race of Sacramento.
